From observation and being one, I'd say the most
important traits for success (with warnings in
parentheses) are:

(1) High self-esteem (bordering on, but not
stepping over the line into, arrogance).
(2) Perseverance and focus (without becoming
unreasonably inflexible).
(3) A dream or vision that extends beyond self
(without images of conquering the galaxy).

There are others, such as creativity, a good idea,
sales/marketing skills, ability to raise money,
and similar business-related talents, but many
of these can be hired.
